Poul Henningsen designed the original three-shade system in 1926-27, using a scientific approach to create glare-free light, soft shadows, and illumination where most needed. The 'PH 80' was created in 1974, after Henningsen's death, as a celebration of what would have been his 80th birthday.

The 'PH 80' Table Lamp is executed with white opal acrylic shades which provide attractively diffused ambient light, and a top reflector in red polycarbonate for the chrome plated version, black polycarbonate for the black variant, or white polycarbonate for the white variant. The variant with the red reflector features a high luster chrome plated stem and textured black base. The all-white variant features a powder coated steel stem with a smooth finish.
