'Copacabana' Indoor/Outdoor Lounge Chair By Mathieu Matégot for GUBI

Few designs express the talent of Mathieu Matégot so beautifully as the ‘Copacabana,’ a sculpturally curved lounge chair whose structure is formed with a single swirl of tubular steel, giving the object a sense of dynamic motion. Elegant but relaxed, the mid-century design has become one of Matégot’s most well-known. The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris holds the design in its permanent collection. Originally created in 1955, Matégot’s iconic chair has been carefully updated in 2024 by GUBI as a statement piece of indoor-outdoor furniture.

Executed in corrosion-resistant powder coated stainless steel, with a soft, circular cushion upholstered in weather-resistant fabrics. The re-edition ensures beauty and a versatile use of the chair, refining its ergonomics with a precision-engineered adjustment to the angle of the backrest and seat. These enhancements in color, function, and ergonomics have resulted in a design icon of the mid-20th-century that is reinvented for the 21st.

Price per item. Available in unlimited quantities in choice of Semi-Matte Black or  International Orange frames. The chair’s attached cushion is offered in two weather-resistant indoor-outdoor upholstery options from luxury Italian mill Limonta: Lorkey or Leslie Striped. Please specify when ordering. If the chair is to be used indoors only, the Copacabana’s cushion can be upholstered with any indoor fabric from GUBI’s extensive upholstery collection. Please inquire when ordering.

A versatile, independent, and self-taught Hungarian designer, architect and artist, Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) first learned about the techniques and potential of sheet metal while working in a mechanical accessories plant as a German prisoner of war. After his liberation, he spent most of his life in his beloved Paris, where he opened his furniture workshop and developed one of his greatest gifts: his ability to transform robust industrial materials into the most delicate of forms.
