Mathieu Matégot 'Tropique' Outdoor Dining Table for GUBI
 
More than five decades after 'Tropique' was first designed and 20 years since the death of its designer, GUBI is proud to pay homage to Mathieu Matégot with the relaunch of one of his most popular collections. 
 
The 'Tropique' Dining Table is exceuted from a stainless steel sheet that is pressed and welded onto the frame, providing a solid, functional surface that allows sunlight to pass through. To give his furniture a balance of strength, durability, and apparent weightlessness, Matégot frequently turned to perforated metal as a material choice, taking advantage of the fact it could be bent and shaped like fabric, resulting in lightweight, transparent surfaces. As with the chairs, the tables in the 'Tropique' Collection feature Matégot's distinctive curve at the feet.

Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) was a self-taught Hungarian designer who settled in Paris after travelling, studying, and gaining experience in set design, window dressing, fashion, and tapestry. Known for his method of Rigitulle for folding, shaping, and bending sheet metal, his mid-century designs remain highly sought-after by collectors.
