Pietro Chiesa 'Luminator' Floor Lamp in Metal for Fontana Arte

Originally designed in 1933 and produced by Fontana Arte, this iconic design retains such a modern personality that its date of birth is hard to believe. A long, narrow stem opens in an upward swoop to catch an upturned cone that conceals the light source. 'Luminator' was the first example on the market of an indirect emission floor lamp.

Pietro Chiesa (Milan 1892-Paris 1948) is known for work that combines extreme modernity with outstanding technical ability. In 1932, Pietro Chiesa was asked by Gio Ponti to share in the artistic direction of the newborn Fontana Arte, a role that would enable him to give full expression to his creative genius by designing over a thousand different objects (furniture, tables, lamps, glass windows, objets d’art etc). Some of these pieces took their place in the history of design and are still produced by Fontana Arte today, such as the Luminator floor lamp, (1933).
