We regularly get inquiries about the authenticity of our pieces here at Two Enlighten.
Given the increase in fakes, dupes, and drop-ship scams across online shops, how can you tell if a piece is real before you invest in it?
Here are a few easy ways to verify:
1) Ask the seller. A reputable seller will source directly from the craftsman, workshop, or factory and will be able to provide a certificate of authenticity, receipt, or other verification of the item's provenance.
2) Look for a stamp or sticker. In the case of Auböck, the workshop still stamps every piece, even the tiniest keyrings with "Austria" or "Auböck" if not both. Chapo Création also stamps every piece, usually on the bottom. Newly made re-editions almost always have a certificate or stamp of authenticity on the piece or in the packaging.
3) Cross-reference vintage pieces with catalogs. When we source vintage at Two Enlighten, we search for catalogs from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s that allow us to identify model numbers and designers.
Finally, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
